For the past few years I had a pretty steady group of riders who got together and made the drive up the mountain. We’d take turns driving, split the gas, eat some dinner and generally make a good trip better. Over the seasons we had either drifted away, or moved to Alaska in some cases, but for whatever reasons I found myself looking at driving up alone again. There were a plenty of social networks which allow people to get together for carpooling, but I began feeling like there was more to it.

I started becoming aware of skiers and riders along the Front Range who didn't have anyone to travel with, maybe they don't drive yet or couldn't afford a pass, a pair of boots or a board. But these kids had the same passion for mountain sports as any other kid in Colorado. I felt like that's where I could make a difference. Team 22 29 is helping these kids realize their potential. We organizing sponsorship for things like transportation, pass cost and basic equipment. As well as sending them to things like avalanche awareness training and the “Woodward at Copper” camp. If they want to compete in events we make sure they can get to and from the event. We want them to have what they need to prepare for these events. Even things as simple as making sure they have sandwiches and a bag of chips for lunch.

In addition to developing the athletes, 22 29 provides an environment where young people who want to learn and grow as photographers, videographers and writers can do so. These talents deserve to be fostered and funded just like the riders. Putting the two together builds an inter-reliant relationship where the better one does, the better the other does. It improves social skills, dependability and increases responsibility amongst the kids.

Quite simply, I love the action sports industry, especially winter sports. So much so that, I tend to pester everyone I'm around trying to get them to experience it. So it wasn’t hard to shift my enthusiasm into a fulltime aspiration to help give kids the opportunity to get out there and see for themselves. Aside from being around things I love, focusing my enthusiasm on such a rewarding task, a task that helps shape the lives of young people for years to come, is the best way I could ever imagine spending my time.
